How Thermal Cameras Actually Work
A FLIR camera doesn't detect moisture, mold, or air directly. It detects surface temperature differences and translates them into a color image. - Radiant heat and HVAC performance: Uneven heating from ductwork or radiant systems can be traced more easily with a thermal camera.
What Thermal Imaging Cannot Do
This is where expectations need to be realistic. A thermal camera cannot see through drywall, confirm mold, measure moisture content, or detect problems behind a finished surface with no temperature differential. Conditions have to be right — enough of a temperature gap between inside and outside, or between wet and dry materials — for anything to show up at all. A bone-dry basement wall on a mild 60-degree day may reveal nothing useful, even if there's a hidden issue.
That's why thermal imaging is almost always paired with a moisture meter and a trained eye. If a cool spot shows up on camera, the next step is confirming it physically, not assuming the worst from a colored image alone.
